Australia has announced its first coronavirus-related death in a year as New South Wales authorities work to curb the spread of the Delta virus.
A 90-year-old woman died just hours after being tested by COVID-19, authorities said Sunday.
His is the first death from an Australian disease this year and came as NSW recorded 77 cases of the virus.
The Prime Minister of the State Gladys Berejiklian told reporters that the figures in Sydney’s largest city, which is in dire straits, are expected to rise.
“I would be surprised if the deadline was less than 100, for new cases,” he said.
On Saturday, there were 50 cases – 2021 history. The latest explosion has 566 cases.
In Sunday’s case, 33 people had been in the area for a long time, which resulted in the end of the three-week period of more than 5 million people in Sydney and surrounding areas being added.
“Since where we are is that the closure is due to be lifted on Friday, anyone can know that it will not happen here,” Berejiklian said.
There are 52 cases in the hospital, or about 1 in 10 people infected with the virus. 15 people are in adequate hospital, five in need of fresh air.
Australia has been doing better than other developed countries in keeping its COVID-19 numbers low, with more than 31,000 cases since the epidemic killed 911.
Vaccination of the vaccine, however, has been difficult due to the constraints and changes of medical guidelines on its larger AstraZeneca fittings.
The vaccine is now available to people over the age of 40 and groups at risk either because of their health or HIV infection at work.
Of those hospitalized in Sydney, 11 were under the age of 35 and more than three of the patients did not receive any doses, health officials said.
