How many people have been killed by US police since George Floyd? | Black Life Essential Issues
At least 1,068 people have been killed by police since the death of an unarmed black man last year.
On May 25, 2020, at 9:25 pm (02:25 GMT, May 26), George Floyd, a 46-year-old black unarmed black American man in Minnesota was also brutally assaulted by police and killed by police. Floyd’s murder sparked international exhibitions the pursuit of justice and the end of prejudice. On April 20, 2021, Floyd’s killer, former police officer Derek Chauvin, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter. Chauvin, a white man, is serving a minimum of 75 years in prison. His sentence is set for June 25.
Between January 2013 and May 2021, police in the United States killed at least 9,179 people, according to a report Recording Police Violence, a research and development team. Since Floyd’s death last year, the group has recorded at least 1,068 police officers across the country – almost three times a day.
According to the group’s latest statistics, police killings are similar to previous years. Some governments have seen a decline, while others have seen an increase in killings.
Cities and countries with high levels of police brutality
A year ago since Floyd’s assassination, 25 states saw a decrease, 19 said to be on the rise and seven states had more police killings compared to the same period a year ago.
New Mexico was killed by police out of 10 people killed by police for one million people – followed by Montana and Alaska, both of whom and eight people killed one million. The East Coast region of New Jersey, followed by Connecticut and Rhode Island, had the lowest police force that killed at least 1 million people in the last 12 months.
The number of Minnesota states, where George Floyd lives, rose from 10 million police officers last year to Floyd’s assassination to 13 (including Floyd) one year after his assassination. This includes Commitment Wright who was shot and killed by police Kim Potter while police were stationed on April 11, 2021.
Black Americans were killed differently from the police
According to the Mapping Police Violence study, even though only 13% of the U.S. population, Black Americans are three times more likely than white Americans to be killed by police. The group also found that “the level of violence in US cities does not reflect the number of police brutality”.
Another study by policeviolencereport.org found that Black people were more likely to be killed by police (27 percent), unarmed (35%) and less likely to be threatened if they were killed (36%).
Less than 2 percent of police officers are paid
Of the 9,170 police killings from 2013 to 2021, 153 police officers (1.7 per cent) were charged and 38 (0.4%) were convicted.
A number of events have been organized across the country on May 25 in memory of George Floyd and reiterate the call for racial justice and police reform.
