Atlanta police officer, after being released after a murder case, has been reinstated | Black Life Essential Issues

City officials ruled in favor of Atlanta police, Garrett Rolfe, who was fired the day after Rayshard Brooks was shot dead.

The burning of a former Atlanta police officer accused of killing an African American man has been changed by a city recruitment committee.

Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe was removed from the group in June, a day after he shot Rayshard Brooks in a parking lot at a fast-food restaurant. Rolfe applied to the Atlanta Civil Service Board which on Wednesday ordered his reinstatement.

“Since the City has failed to comply with any of the provisions of this Act and the information received on the testimony of witnesses, the Council concludes that the Applicant has not been granted his or her rights,” the commission said in a statement.

“As a result, the Council submitted Garrett Rolfe’s appeal and reinstated his dismissal as an APD.”

Lance LoRusso, Rolfe’s lawyer, said the result of the commission’s statement was that a police officer would not return to work immediately but would be on leave to attend pending trial.

Rolfe was charged with firing on Brooks twice in the back as he fled from police on June 12. Brooks, who was heavily involved in alcohol, was lying in his car, blocking Wendy’s restaurant drive.

Police Body camera video shows a 27-year-old black man fighting with two white police officers after he told him he drank too much alcohol to drive and tried to arrest him. Brooks grabbed a Taser from one of the officers and fled, shooting at Rolfe as he ran. An autopsy found that Brooks was shot twice back, and the coroner controlled his the cause of death was death.

Rolfe, who lost his job in the shooting, faces charges including murder. Another police officer, Devin Brosnan, was charged with felony criminal mischief for firing on a sculpture with a criminal charge. Lawyers for both managers say their clients have done the right thing, and they are free on the bond.

Former Fulton County Vice President Paul Howard brought charges against Rolfe and Brosnan within a week of the shooting.

“The Brooks did not present themselves as a threat,” Fulton County Attorney Paul L Howard Jr. said in a statement that he had announced the charges against Rolfe and Brosnan on June 18. Howard said Brooks did not appear violent.

“After being shot, for two minutes and 12 seconds, he did not receive medical treatment,” Howard said.

Mr Howard’s successor, Fani Willis, who took office in January, has twice asked Georgia’s attorney general Chris Carr to reconsider, saying Howard’s actions had prevented his office from continuing to prosecute the case. Carr denied the allegations, saying the potential problems were related to Howard, so the responsibility for the case remained with his office.

Fulton County High Court Judge Christopher Brasher last month asked Willis to provide evidence to show why he should not take part last Monday in order to make a decision on the matter.
