Have you ever heard that? the old saying “Enough heat to cook an egg on the road”? It may seem like an exaggeration (but only a few), but the sun is strong enough to cook a wide variety of foods — as long as you catch it, light it, or put a strong glow on it.
With a few inexpensive home appliances, you can create a safe and efficient oven that can use solar energy to heat up to more than 200 Fahrenheit. It is very hot to cook sausage, bacon, brown, or readers. Obviously, the conditions must be right for heating the oven as follows: a hot day with the sun in a good place, and its brightness shining on a carefully crafted oven. However, even if you throw everything together enough to do the trick, your solar oven can reach a temperature of about 160 degrees.
With summer in full swing and the kids just sitting around in the afternoon, it’s a good time to do one of our favorite family activities. Making a solar oven teaches us a great deal about physics, solar power, and food preparation. Plus, it’s fun because everyone is eating the results. What you need is 20 minutes and a little money.
Collect Your Equipment
- Cardboard with a volume between 1 and 2 cubic feet
- Aluminum foil. The heavier the artwork is the easier it is to deal with, but any artwork does
- Skillet or black baking pan
- Protective materials such as polystyrene, foam packing, newspaper, or fiberglass insulation
- Remove plastic wrap, such as Saran wrap or other
- Cloth tape, like electrical tape or gaffer tape
- Kitchen thermometer
Step 1: Think Inside the Box
Choose the right cardboard. Prepare a box that is between 1 and 2 cubic feet volume, or the size of a drinking habit. We used a 10 x 10 x 14-inch box from Amazon with good results. Cut enough security to fit inside the box. Cover the bottom and sides, but not the pimples. You want the air inside the box to be as hot as possible, and the layer to protect the oven from overheating on both sides of the box. Step 2: Check
Cover the foam with the aluminum foil, and glue it in place. The shiny, shiny metal allows the sun’s heat to circulate inside the box, which heats the inside properly. Next, cut out four pieces of aluminum foil that is slightly larger than the four box pillars. Label the artwork on the side facing inside the inside of each piece. Write in the corners so that the artwork stays on the floor. You will set up these light bulbs to let the sunlight in the box, which helps keep the oven warm.
Step 3: Set up Step
Put the cooker inside the box. This is where you will put the food you want to burn. Use a flat iron, a small pan, or iron. Use another black one that retains heat, as dark cooking areas are much hotter than silver or white.
