Meta estimates that 50,000 people were supervised by companies under their control

Meta has banned seven companies that cater to at least 50,000 people worldwide. The company also banned more than 1,000 accounts associated with these companies.

Leading companies for removal include Cobwebs, Cognyte, Black Cube, Bluehawk CI, BelltroX and Cytrox. Facebook security analysts also identified a “unknown group in China,” which is “developing surveillance tools” and using face recognition software. Facebook investigators did not say who was behind the group, but said the app was used by “domestic laws” in the country.

While some companies develop spyware programs, these groups also use alternatives, including fake accounting engineering to gain access to the information of those who want it. In a press conference Thursday, Meta security chief Nathaniel Gleicher said that while there has been a lot of interest in “hiring” companies such as the NSO, the “employment monitoring” companies are also under pressure. “One of the things that is known is the task of monitoring or evaluating and following randomly,” he said.

Overall, Meta says it will identify “about 50,000” people from more than 100 countries believed to be the companies. Facebook encourages users to reconsider their password preferences, and increase account security as a two-factor authentication.
