Tom Barrack, a former Colony Capital leader who was one of Donald Trump’s first human rights activists at the 2016 presidential election, has been arrested and charged with unlawful conduct as a representative of the United Arab Emirates.

Barrack served as chair of Trump’s first committee and as an unauthorized adviser to his work and supervisors, during which time, prosecutors said, he advised US officials on foreign affairs in the Middle East.

He was detained in California on Tuesday morning, the United States Department of Justice said.

Opponents have accused Barrack of helping to bring charges against Trump’s superiors over the UAE in matters ranging from the Saudi-led crackdown on Qatar to the recognition of the Muslim Brotherhood, an international Sunni Islamist organization that Trump saw as a terrorist group.

The UAE, which has become one of the world’s leading and most active Arab states, has long been regarded as a key US ally in the Middle East.

In a statement issued by anti-government protesters, Barrack appears to be enjoying his role as an anonymous ambassador.

“Our Ppl wants you to help,” Rashid Al Malik said in a statement sent to Barrack in 2017. “He hopes you can run the agencies.”

Barrack’s spokesman, who left Colony in March, said Tuesday that he was preparing to fight the charges.
